the halloween book tag

this is a tag i found on youtube, it was made by @ naomi lemire (check out her video!) THIS HAS A SPOILER FOR THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO SO IF DONT READ SKIP THIS !!!!

1. Carving pumpkins – what book would you carve up and light on fire?

love & other curses by michael thomas ford. the fact that the MC can’t take no for an answer was highly repulsive and his behavior throughout the book was disgusting.

2. Trick or treat – what character is a treat, what character is a trick?

always a treat : jem carstairs a smol bean.
always a trick : cardan greenbriar i had such a hard time with cardan and i’m still not sure whether or not i like him.

3. Candy corn – what book is always sweet?

to all the boys i’ve loved before by jenny han. although i didn’t like the sequels, the first book is such a cute romantic book and i couldn’t help but swoon every time and be disgusted by the fact that yes, i have a heart and it feels things.

4. Ghosts – what character would you love to visit you as a ghost?

evelyn hugo even though she would probably be annoyed at me for wanting to see her.

5. Dressing up in costume – what character would you want to be for a day?

hermione granger so i could do magic or kaz brekker so i could fuck around for a day, rob a bank and get away with it.

6. Wizards and witches – what is your favorite Harry Potter moment?

any moment from the first book (lame answer but honest)

7. Blood and gore – what book was so creepy that you had to take a break from it for awhile?

okay so this has never actually happened to me but i did read kafka on the shore by haruki murakami recently and at some point, i did put the book down (for like a week) because it got a bit too much for me.

i tag you !

top 5 halloween reads

yay a top 5 for when you don’t know what to write about but you really want to !!! halloween is one of my favorite times of the year even though i don’t usually do anything (and trick or treating isn’t really a thing where i live). here are five halloween-ish reads for when you wanna cuddle under a blanket with a hot cocoa and a book. psa : none of these are really scary, they’re just books i enjoy reading around that time of the year !

  1. frankenstein by mary shelley

this probably gets recommended to everyone for halloween, and rightfully so. frankenstein is a great book, discussing a lot of different themes (monsters, humans, aren’t they the same ?, giving life, responsibility, consequences). the atmosphere is enticing and dark and mary shelley’s writing style is unique and lyrical. this is definitely a book that will stick with you (and if you don’t like reading “classics”, i would say it doesn’t actually read like a classic)

2. dr. jekyll and mr. hyde by robert louis stevenson

it is about a london lawyer named john gabriel utterson who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, dr henry jekyll, and the evil edward hyde. i don’t know what to say about this one, read it it’s really good.

3. the picture of dorian gray by oscar wilde

probably made it into my top 5 favorite books to ever be written. this is a book some people DO NOT like at all and that can be understandable. yet, the picture of dorian gray is one of the Most atmospheric, beautifully written book to be written. dorian gray is basically an emo little shit that turns into somewhat of a monster. much like frankenstein, what i love most about it is the fact that it sticks with you once you’re done and gives you that “huh” feeling.

4. the darkest part of the forest by holly black

again, not a “scary” read but this book gives me halloween vibes and there’s nothing i can do about it. it’s about the forest, and fairies and knights and about subverting genre expectations (much like elise @ thebookishactress said in her brilliant review, read here)

5. (i really didn’t wanna say harry potter or six of crows so) macbeth by shakespeare

if you’re into plays (and even if you’re not), macbeth is SUCH a good halloween read. it’s got murder and craziness (@ lady macbeth : ily), revenge, witches, prophecy and bloodshed. it’s simply put That Bitch (shakespeare would be proud)

what are your favorite books to read during october/halloween times ?

July TV Shows Recs (Aka My Current Watchlist) #2

While the end of July was kind of A Whole Mess™️ everything wise, the first half wasn’t that bad in terms of discovering new TV shows ! I caught up on a bunch of TV shows I’ll share with you now !

Recently Watched ✨

1. La Casa de Papel Season 1 ✔︎
Rating : 3.5/5
Available on Netflix

I’ve really been liking where this show is going and although it’s not my favorite, I can appreciate the character arcs and the cleverness of the plot/ El Professor’s plan. The ending of season 1 had me on the edge of my seat. My favorite character for now is Nairobi.

2. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 1 ✔︎
Rating : 5/5
Available on Amazon Prime

This TV show tells the story of Mrs Maisel, a married woman in the 1950s whose husband leaves her for another woman. She finds herself wanting to become a comedian. Mrs Maisel is ahead of her time, hilarious and wonderful. The aesthetics of the show are pretty but the cast of characters and Mrs Maisel delightful personality make the show what it is. I can’t recommend it enough.

3. The Office Season 1 + Season 2 + Season 3 ✔︎
Rating S1 : 2/5
Rating S2 : 3/5
Rating S3 : 3/5
Available on Amazon Prime

I’ll be honest… I don’t see what the fuss is about. While some of the comedic aspects are gold, I’ve rarely found myself laughing. Michael Scott is endearing but… for the most part, is very annoying. I’m not gonna lie, I’ve only watched it because my Best Friend loves it so much and she kept gushing about Jim and Pam (which honestly !!! I think watching the show for just these two is worth it). I understand that The Office was “groundbreaking” when it came out and in a way, I do understand why people like it, it’s just not something I would’ve gravitated toward.

4. The 100 Season 5 ✔︎
Rating : 3/5
Available on Netflix

I won’t lie I have very mixed feelings about this season. While I enjoy the constant interrogations about morality and what we consider to be right (and how far we are willing to go to survive), I feel like this season was missing something.

5. Good Omens Season 1  ✔︎
Rating : 4/5
Available on Amazon Prime

A Superior Show and that’s all. Invented Love as we know it. This show is a masterpiece (Crowley in the burning bookshop and then driving off while Queen plays OH AND THE GODDAMN SOUNDTRACK OF THIS SHOW). Good Omens will completely shatter your expectations : it’s a work of Art.

6. Stranger Things Season 3 ✔︎
Rating : 4/5
Available on Netflix

The kids are supposed to be grown, right !!! BUT THERES TOO MUCH PAIN FOR THEM TO HANDLE, THEY DONT DESERVE ALL THIS SHIT. I feel like the hype over ST3 died down quite quickly but don’t get it wrong because this season was very good. Millie’s and Noah’s acting specifically have blown me AWAY.  Winona Ryder owns this ass, by the way.

Currently Watching ✨

1. Big Little Lies Season 2
Available on HBO (I watch it on a French paying streaming service)

I have 2 episodes left and I’m enjoying myself a lot (although less than in season 1). This season deals with the aftermath of Season 1’s events. I’m not entirely sure how I feel about it yet. Meryl Streep (the newest addition to the cast) remains a phenomenal actress (I hate her character with a passion though)

2. Euphoria Season 1
Available on HBO (I watch it on a French paying streaming service)

I have 4 episodes left so I’ll address what I think of it when I finish it this month.

3. Romance is a Bonus Book
Available on Netflix

This show Owns Me, alright. I have the second half of it to catch up on. Romance is a Bonus Book is a Korean drama/romance telling the story of Kang Dan-yi, a 40 year-old divorcée. She doesn’t have a diploma and her husband leaves her for another woman but decides to get her shit together and starts working at a publishing company where her best friend/oldest friend Eun-Ho works at (Eun-Ho is also in love with her but has never told her). Honestly this show gives me the same feels as a good rom-com does and I keep swooning every two second. It’s simply amazing. Dan-yi’s resilience is inspiring and I love her with my whole heart.

Started Watching But Didn’t Finish/Kinda Stopped ✨

  1. 1. The Rain (saw 4 episodes)
    Available on Netflix

  2. A Danish original series about a post apocalyptic world destroyed by a toxic rain. Brother and sister survived and are trying to find their dad who’s a scientist and could’ve found a cure.
  1. 2. Fleabag (saw 2 episodes)
    Available on Amazon Prime
  • – Woman loses her best friend
  • – Is a Mess™️
  • – Breaks the fourth wall and is brilliantly written (granted I only watched two episodes)

3. The Office Season 4 (saw 4 episodes)
Available on Amazon Prime

I’m just… not really into it.

What have you been watching during July ?
Any favorites ? Tell me about it, I’d love to know !!!

The Reading Rush 2019 TBR

It’s my first time participating in the Reading Rush (previously known as BooktubeAThon) and I couldn’t be more excited. The Reading Rush is a week long readathon (from the 22nd to the 28th of July) for book lovers all around the world (you can find their website here !) It was started in 2013 by Ariel Bissett and Raeleen Lemay

FYI : my username on the Reading Rush website is @noareadsbooks if you wanna add me !

I’ve been in a reading slump for the last few weeks and not in the greatest mood to read. However, I can feel my reading mood coming back and I’m so happy to fully get back into reading (especially because I always get the most reading done during July).

The readathon comes with 7 fun challenges to spice up your TBR but also help you choose what you’re going to read ! Here are the 7 challenges, along with the books I hope to read during the readathon !

1/ Read a book with purple on the cover

God Bless This Cover

For this challenge, I’m picking Hello Girls by Brittany Cavallero and Emily Henry, which gives off strong Thelma and Louise vibes and I got an arc for it (the book is out on August 6th 2019 !)

2/ Read a book in the same spot the entire time

I’ll be reading Dear Ijeawele, or a Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi because it’s really short (it could also count for challenge 3 but I wanna read 7 books because I’m extra that way 🙂 )

3/ Read a book you meant to read last year

A Conjuring of Light (Shades of Magic #3) by VE Schwab. I’ve read the first two books last year and intended to finish the series before the end of 2018 but miserably failed. I shall conquer my never-ending TBR one way or the other.

4/ Read an author’s first book

Red Rising by Pierce Brown which I’ve been wanting to read for a while ! (also not at all because of this review or its first paragraph)

5/ Read a book with a non-human main character

I could go on a 30 minute rant about how THIS IS NOT KATY YALL

Opal (Lux #3) by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I’ve been slowly making my way through this series and I can’t wait to start book 3. Daemon is fine and all but Katy… oof, I stan One Badass Independent Bitch and it’s her.

6/ Pick a book that has five or more words in the title

A Dress for the Wicked by Autumn Krause. I don’t know much about this book except that it’s about fashion but I’m excited.

7/ Read and watch a book to movie adaptation

I’ve been giving this one a lot of thoughts and I decided I’m gonna give myself multiple options because I have no clue what I’ll be in the mood for:
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
Or maybe something different entirely ? I have no idea !

That’s it for my TBR (let’s hope I stick to it!)
